Ethiopia to Host Internet Governance Forum in November 2022 –

Addis Ababa, June 3, 2022 (Walta) – Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla (Ph.D.), calls on all countries to take part in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) that Ethiopia is preparing to host from 28 November to 2 December 2022 in Addis Ababa.

The Minister appeared as a high-level guest speaker and roundtable discussant in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2022 that is being held at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva from May 30 to June 3, 2022.

He said ICT is one of the priority areas identified by the government of Ethiopia to accelerate the economic growth and development of the country, although there are challenges.

The Minister highlighted various measures taken by the government to set up legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as infrastructure, power, and Connectivity to reap results from the sector.

In connection with that, the government is encouraging digital literacy, innovation, and Startups in the sector, the Minister said.

Belete also had bilateral discussions with Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, and participants at the forum about maximizing the benefits of the sector in Ethiopia.

WSIS Forums are organized each year and provide opportunities to discuss the role of ICTs in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and targets.
